Farming: Australian Style

The following photos are from a few weeks ago. When Sana and Sonia were here (with their parents - of course.) It was a warm day (surprising, I know) but we braved the heat and headed out for a day at a local farm. The kids had a fantastic time as the following (numerous) photos will attest to.
The kids thought that this was hilarious. Ruhi especially wanted me to include this one of Dolly the sheep in the farmer's hat. In Australia the sun is very strong but we're not quite at the stage where livestock also need wear protective gear.

Anisa milking a cow. Some assistance was required, but a great effort none the less.

Cuddling baby bunnies. Anisa adored the rabbits...I am not sure that they felt the same way, especially after the way she would lunge after the baby ones and plonk them in her lap.
Sonia loved the bunnies too. Hers was a slightly gentler approach. She would wrap them in her top or nestle them in Sana's hat.

Bayan making friends with the lambs.

Ruhi is helping to feed the baby lambs. For this they use recycled, plastic coke bottles with special teats that fit over the top. Either Ruhi got a defective teat or the lamb was overly-enthusiastic. The teat kept blasting off the end of the bottle as soon as the lamb tried to drink. With great determination and perseverance, and a little help from the farmer Ruhi managed to help the lamb finish its feed.Anisa, Sana and Sonia's attempts went slightly smoother.
Ruhi enjoyed feeding the guinea pigs. It was much easier than the lambs.
Daisy the cow sampling some fingers.

Here is Anisa patting a sheep, or is that a woolly mammoth?

While Ruhi fed one deer another one snuck up behind and started to eat her shirt.

One determined emu. He never took his eye from the food bucket the lady was holding. He had already been fed but took every opportunity to maneuver himself closer to the (scrumptious) dry pellets. He even walked directly into Bayan (who, being at a lower altitude than the food bucket was entirely out of vision). Bayan was a bit startled by a sudden, bushy, face-full of feathers, but recovered quickly and happily trotted off to help feed the kangaroos.

Apparently we have a tail fetish in our family. Bayan had a dandy time picking up this kangaroo's tail and letting it drop back to the ground (the kangaroo soon tired of this and sought snacks elsewhere). Thankfully he has not taken after Anisa and tried to taste the tail...yet.
Ruhiyyih and Anisa loved feeding the kangaroos. They are soooo friendly. They eat fairly gently as well, not like that grabby emu who would jab his face at anything resembling food.

And more of the kangaroos.

Still more.

And more...
The camera ran out of batteries here, otherwise there would be more photos. After the animals were all fed we scampered off to wash our hands (with extra soap) and had our own picnic lunch in a secluded grove beneath a canopy of ancient trees.

Loved these! Makes me wish I was there. I think I would handle it better then the last time I went to the petting zoo. I was very small and the animals were very large.
