Anzac Day

While the nation was out en masse commemorating Anzac Day with marches and parades to honor the sacrifice of thousands of soldiers during the first world war, we stayed home baking Anzac biscuits (cookies) and re-read the story of The Donkey Man. It is a story based on the experience of Richard Henderson who was one of the medical officers at Gallipoli and who used donkeys to carry wounded and sick soldiers to safety, often at the risk of his own life. The book is narrated by the donkey, is truthful, accurate and charming and made a long ago battle in a far off place something that the children could easily grasp and relate to. I think they have a better understanding of the bravery and courage that many of those men possessed despite the brutal situations they were forced to endure. It is a testimony to the fact that kindness, compassion and friendship can be found - even in the midst of war.
