Poor Mehran

"Baba can fix it." Is the happy refrain often heard in the house these days, especially following Bayan's favourite announcement: "Uh, oh! Bwoken. Oh, Deah!"

Mehran has been repeatedly enlisted to help repair everything from flashlights and train tracks to horse tails, umbrellas and sandal heels, not to mention the bathroom tiles, front pavers and an apparently endless stream of dysfunctional computers.

As far as Mehran is concerned it is getting old. And frustrating. Fast.

Here he is attempting to reconstruct the latest casualty. He is sporting a hand crafted necklace courtesy of Anisa whose loving fingers made it, (the same fingers who cracked the outer shell of the flashlight, smeared yogurt on the couch and decimated my supply of peppermint foot cream- while blaming it all on Bayan) whose sweet arms draped it tenderly around his neck as she said: "For you Baba." Then, with a giggle, a kiss and enthusiastic words of encouragement she left him to his "fixings" and scampered off to play. She will undoubtedly return soon with more damaged goods in need of repair and will most charmingly bestow them upon Baba while innocently beseeching him to fix them...Again...

You know, as a parent, you sometimes wonder if this was what you signed up for. Sigh! But, carry on, duty calls, and there is no going back. You can't send them back where they came from. Mehran surely has my sympathy.

Yet they are so cute, so charming, so innocent that their wreaking of havoc is no more than part of their naturally enthusiastic drive to learn about everything around them as quickly as they can and enjoy themselves in the process. Joy and frustration mingle on a daily basis.

Aren't you glad there are two of you to share the "challenges"?

Abdul-Baha refers to children as pearls. One day, while parenting, I recalled how pearls are made and it became more clear. Pearls begin with a speck that is an irritation to the oyster.
